Apple has released a new update for iPhones and iPads. The latest version, iOS 26.1, fixes a few things users complained about and adds some useful improvements. It also includes important security updates designed to protect your device.

One of the biggest changes addresses a feature many users did not like.

Turning Down Liquid Glass

When Apple introduced Liquid Glass it looked futuristic. The translucent effect made icons and widgets blend into the background as if they were floating over your wallpaper. It was visually interesting but many iPhone and iPad users quickly found it frustrating.

Liquid Glass made it harder to see icons and widgets, especially when the background image had a lot of color or detail. Many users complained that the effect made the home screen harder to read.

With iOS 26.1 you can finally tone it down.

Open Settings, tap Display and Brightness, and look for the Liquid Glass option. You can switch the appearance from Clear to Tinted, which increases contrast and makes icons easier to see.

Stop the Camera From Opening by Accident

Another update fixes something many people noticed on newer iPhones.

On iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models the camera can sometimes open accidentally when you pick up the phone. The camera control button was designed to make it easy to launch the camera quickly, but it can be triggered unintentionally.

You can disable it if it happens too often.

Go to Settings, tap Accessibility, then select Camera Control. Turning the feature off prevents the camera from opening when you do not want it to.

Apple Music Gets an Easier Way to Skip Songs

Apple Music users will notice a small but helpful change.

You can now swipe on the mini player to skip to the next song or go back to the previous one. This means you no longer have to open the full screen music player just to change tracks.

It is a small improvement but it makes controlling music faster.

Important Security Updates

Like most Apple updates iOS 26.1 also includes several security fixes.

Apple says the update closes vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to run malicious code or access private information stored on your device. The company typically does not publish the exact details right away. Apple usually waits until most devices have installed the update before revealing the specific security issues that were fixed.

That is one reason security experts recommend installing updates sooner rather than later.

When to Install the Update

The update is available now for iPhones and iPads.

If you skipped the original iOS 26 update the download may be fairly large. It is best to install it while connected to your home WiFi network and when you have time to let the installation finish.

Keeping your device updated not only adds new features but also protects your personal data.
