Could AI End Civilization? Why Some Experts Are Warning About the Next 10 Years. And What Nobody’s Talking About.

You may have seen humanoid robots walking, self-driving vehicles navigating streets or autonomous tractors working fields and thought, “This is the future.”

But the future some artificial intelligence researchers are worried about isn’t really the robots.

It’s the intelligence controlling them.

Some researchers working on advanced AI are warning that future systems could eventually become more capable than humans and potentially too powerful for us to reliably control.

That doesn’t mean ChatGPT is plotting against us or robots are about to rise up. The concern is about what could come next as AI becomes more intelligent, autonomous and connected to computer systems and the physical world.

AI Is Moving From Answering to Acting

Most people currently use artificial intelligence by asking a question.

Ask ChatGPT or Claude to explain something, write an email or plan a vacation, and it responds.

But AI is already moving beyond the traditional chatbot with what are known as AI agents.

Instead of giving an agent instructions for every individual step, a user can give it a goal. The agent may then determine what needs to be done, make a plan, use software, browse websites, write computer code and complete multiple steps toward accomplishing that goal.

That increased independence is part of what concerns AI safety researchers.

Imagine systems that become smarter than the best human experts.

AI doesn’t need to sleep. It operates at computer speed. And unlike a human expert, software can potentially be copied so that many versions of a capable system are working simultaneously.

The question is what happens if those systems eventually become dramatically more capable than they are today.

How Could AI Threaten Civilization?

One concern involves cybersecurity.

An extremely capable AI could potentially discover weaknesses in computer networks faster than humans could identify and repair them.

That could put banks, communications networks, power systems, government computers and even military systems at risk.

There are also concerns about biological threats.

Researchers worry increasingly capable AI could make specialized knowledge more accessible and potentially help someone develop biological weapons or other dangerous technologies.

But perhaps the biggest concern is something researchers call the “alignment problem.”

What Happens If AI Doesn’t Do What We Intended?

The alignment problem is essentially this: How do we make sure an extremely intelligent AI continues doing what humans actually want it to do?

Imagine giving a very powerful AI a goal.

The system could potentially find a way of accomplishing that goal that its creators never anticipated.

And if shutting down the AI would prevent it from accomplishing its objective, avoiding shutdown could theoretically become useful to completing the goal.

That doesn’t require the AI to hate people.

It doesn’t require the AI to become angry.

It may not even require the AI to be conscious.

The concern is simply that a sufficiently capable system could pursue an objective in ways humans didn’t intend and eventually become difficult to stop.

Could AI Start Improving Itself?

There’s another possibility that worries some researchers.

AI can already write computer code.

Future systems could potentially become capable enough to help researchers develop better artificial intelligence.

A more capable AI helps develop an even more capable AI.

That system helps develop the next generation.

The idea is sometimes called recursive self-improvement.

If that process ever accelerated dramatically, researchers worry AI capabilities could improve faster than governments, companies and researchers could understand or control them.

Whether that will actually happen remains uncertain.

Why Are Researchers Talking About the Next 10 Years?

Former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently left Anthropic while warning about the race toward self-improving superintelligence.

Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger has said he puts the probability of AI killing everyone within the next decade at greater than 10 percent.

That’s one researcher’s estimate. It is not a scientific consensus, and it certainly does not mean humanity has been given a 10-year expiration date.

Researchers disagree substantially about both how quickly AI will advance and how dangerous future systems could become.

But even researchers who assign relatively small probabilities to catastrophic outcomes argue that the potential consequences make the risks worth taking seriously.

Governments Face an AI Dilemma

Governments are already paying attention to AI safety.

But there’s a complication.

The United States and other countries don’t see advanced artificial intelligence only as something that needs regulation and safeguards.

They also see AI as an enormous economic, intelligence and military advantage.

That creates a global race.

If one company slows development because of safety concerns, another company may continue.

If one country slows down, another country may not.

That makes international cooperation particularly difficult. Governments may simultaneously want stronger AI safeguards while fearing that slowing their own development could allow a rival nation to gain an advantage.

Today’s AI Isn’t Taking Over the World

It’s important to separate today’s technology from predictions about what could eventually be developed.

ChatGPT isn’t secretly plotting to take control.

Claude isn’t trying to escape your computer.

Humanoid robots aren’t preparing to rise up against their owners.

The warnings concern hypothetical future AI systems considerably more capable and autonomous than anything consumers are using today.

No one knows whether artificial intelligence will ever become powerful enough to threaten civilization.

But that uncertainty is exactly why some AI researchers say the issue needs attention now.

The question isn’t what AI can do today.

It’s whether humans can learn how to control tomorrow’s AI before someone builds it.
