How to Spot Hidden Cameras in Hotel Rooms and Vacation Rentals
Hidden cameras are becoming cheaper and easier to buy. Some cost less than fifty dollars online and can stream live video directly to a phone.
These cameras are often small, record to a microSD card, and only activate when they detect motion. The scary part is how easily they can be disguised.
You can find hidden cameras disguised as outlet covers, alarm clocks, battery chargers, and even smoke detectors. If you do not know what you are looking for, you could be standing right in front of one and never realize it.
Why hidden cameras are difficult to notice
Many of these devices are designed to look exactly like common household items.
For example, you can find fake smoke detectors online that are actually recording devices. They look perfectly normal at first glance, but instead of detecting smoke they are recording video.
One of the first clues something might be wrong is location. A smoke detector placed directly over a bed or in a bathroom should raise questions.
If you are staying in a hotel room, Airbnb, or vacation rental, there are a few simple things you can do to check the room.
Follow the power cables
Some hidden cameras run on batteries, but most need constant power.
Look at what is plugged into outlets. Follow power cables and check devices that do not seem to make sense. If something appears out of place or unnecessary, take a closer look.
Use your phone flashlight
Another trick is to turn off the lights and slowly scan the room using your phone’s flashlight.
Camera lenses reflect light. As you move the light across shelves, vents, picture frames, clocks, and decorations, look carefully for small reflections or tiny blinking lights.
Those reflections can sometimes reveal a hidden camera lens.
Do camera detection apps work?
Some people suggest checking the WiFi router to see what devices are connected. In reality, that is harder than it sounds.
Even if you log in to the router, many connected devices appear with generic names that do not reveal what they are. Someone determined to hide a camera could also connect it to a separate network.
There are also apps that claim to detect hidden cameras on WiFi networks. Many people try them, but they often provide confusing results and do not reliably identify cameras.
Where hidden cameras are most likely to be placed
People who install hidden cameras usually place them where someone expects privacy.
That often includes:
- Bedrooms
- Bathrooms
- Changing areas
The good news is that many of these devices are inexpensive and not very sophisticated. Once you know what to look for, they are often easier to spot.
What to do if you find a hidden camera
If something seems odd or out of place, trust your instinct.
If you find something suspicious, do not touch it or remove it. Contact police instead. Investigators may be able to collect evidence from the device, including fingerprints.
Hidden cameras rely on one thing. You not noticing them.
Taking a few minutes to scan a room with your eyes and a flashlight can give you peace of mind during your stay.
And it is a good idea to teach your kids what to look for too.
